PSHE

Intent

At St. Wilfrid’s C of E Primary School, personal, social and health education (PSHE) enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

Implementation

At St. Wilfrid’s, PSHE can be taught either as individual sessions over a period of a half term or in blocks where appropriate so that we can best meet the children’s needs. Each half term has a unit theme: Identity, society and equality, Mental health and emotional wellbeing, Careers, financial capability and economic wellbeing, keeping safe and managing risk, Relationship and sex education, Physical health and wellbeing and Drug, alcohol and tobacco education. These are taught to an appropriate level depending on the age of the children.

These units are linked to safeguarding, the school values, British values, rights and responsibilities, and Growth Mind-sets so that the children have depth and breadth within this area of the curriculum.

Lessons involve class discussions and group activities and evidence of the work completed is gathered into a class book so that the focus is on the discussions and the children’s understanding of what is taught and not on the written aspects.

As needed, support is provided to children when they find particular topics more challenging.
